Happy 4th of July!

A cartoon like statue of Uncle Sam stands on the corner in Pulaski, Tennessee.

The design of the American Flag was approved by the Continental Congress in June of 1777. That resolution said:

"Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Today the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies. The 50 stars represent the 50 states.

White means purity and innocence. Red means valor and bravery. Blue means vigilance, perseverance and justice. White stars on a blue background liken the United States to a constellation of stars in the sky.

In 1824 an American sea captain named William Driver, from Massachusetts, received an American flag as a gift. As he proudly displayed that flag, he named it "Old Glory". As his friends and fellow Americans heard that name, they liked it and the name Old Glory because a popular nickname for the flag.

Old Glory flies in the shed side of an old barn in Pulaski, Tennessee. Notice the old farm tools seemingly scattered around the barn. I see a chain with hook, a ring from an old wagon wheel, two sets of farm scales, a lantern, and garden plow, a saw, and some other items.

Happy Independence Day to all on this 4th day of July, 2025.

As we Americans celebrate we should reflect on how far we have come as a nation. The United States has changed a lot since it began in 1776. Americans have seen dark and gloomy days, but far more bright and good days.

While we allow room for differences in our fellow citizens, we stand united as Americans. American citizens value independence, liberty, freedom, and equality. On this July 4th we celebrate 249 years of being a great nation.

America has made large contributions to the world in terms of freedom and liberty, in science and exploration, in art and culture and education. America has a well deserved reputation for offering aid and kindness to those in need all around the world. America is a proud nation, and for good reason.

The history and culture of America are still visible in 2025 for those who will take notice as they move around our country. You just just have to take time to look and think about what you are seeing.
